Sunday mornings are often quite busy in the lineups around here. This one was atypical though - reasonably populated but not uncomfortably so, with great conditions and fun waves on a well defined bank. And it was one of the last weekends of the calendar summer.

It was summer and it was warm. The waves obviously weren't great but this guy rode a bunch of waves in a short amount of time and called it a surf. A friend of mine has an interesting rule for himself; he has to ride at least three waves to call it a 'surf'. Fair enough I reckon.

A Lost Session

Summer Grovelling

The waves were nothing to write home about, but the water was warm and the sun was out. A fun grovelly session in south east QLD. It was a pretty rare day when the water, sky and wind all came together at once this Summer just been. But then again that's not that unusual for summer.

Stunned Mullet

I'm thinking it's probably an Australian expression, so for those from further afield... the stunned mullet is a look of bewilderment or astonishment. The guy on the rocks in the top right is doing a pretty good impression. The waves passing in front of those rocks were nothing special either so I'm not really sure what brought the look on. Maybe he saw a mermaid swim by.

As keen as I was for a surf when I arrived at the beach on this May evening last year, the sun was well and truly gone. So I grabbed the camera instead (as you do with no light...), watching the small crew of mostly younger surfers reminded me of being a bit younger myself and just not wanting to get out, when there was less responsibility waiting at home and I'd surf on into the blackness or sometimes by the moon or ambient street lights.
